A year of what the tide brought in

Every photograph in this calendar began with a walk along the tideline. I gather sea glass through the day, and when the light, the background and my patient companions all line up, I arrange the day’s finds in the tidal zone and photograph them right there. It’s the same beach, the same day and whatever light the sky is offering. There’s no studio lighting and no pieces pulled from a jar at home.

The result is twelve months of genuine ocean-tumbled glass on the rocks, sand and tide pools of Vancouver Island. February holds a piece of true red, one of the rarest colours to turn up on this coast. May is a stack reflected in a still tide pool, June is a cairn on dark sand at sunset, and December closes the year with a full rainbow lineup.

A note about January

The cover photograph appears again as January. Calendars spend the year hanging open, so the cover gets a second turn on the wall just as the new year begins.
